THE AFTERLIFE

CHALLENGE

Our goal was to channel the raw energy of a classic Porsche, no matter their condition, into the viewer’s very being. There is a reason why so many people love these cars and are often willing to pour countless hours (and money) into restoring them. It's more than their sound, that timeless shape, or even their legacy.

Porsches have a soul.

The work the craftsmen at Classic Porsche Restoration perform literally revives these vehicles to their former glory, often making them better than ever before. These machines are given a new life after death.

SOLUTION

We wanted to highlight the relationship between craftsman and Porsche through unmistakable sounds and visuals showcasing each aspect of the restoration process. We also had see these Porsches in their natural habitat; the road.

This juxtaposition between the shop scenes and the high-energy driving shots served to emphasize the true impact of CPR's work.

ART DIRECTION

The goal was always to create telling environments that serve as a canvas upon which the story unfolds. For this project, everything was basically ready to go; we had the facilities and tools used by CPR, the scenic roads of the Eastern Shore, and the Porsches at every stage of the restoration process from start to finish.

Because this project was so focused on the passion behind these vehicles, we want to keep things simple as far as locations and production design. With input from CPR, we chose areas around the shop that worked for the production as well as locations around Easton, MD where we could (safely) film our hero 1968 Porsche 912 in action.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

The scenes shot at the shop were characterized by slow, precise dolly movements that aimed to highlight specific features or actions during the restoration process. These methodical camera moves as well as the slow edit pacing emphasized the care and precision that goes into the work at CPR. Just because these scenes are more controlled doesn't mean they'll be boring to watch. We wanted to make these a feast for the eyes through our careful composition and lighting, as well as the action happening in frame.

In stark contrast to the shop scenes, the driving sequences were to be chaotic, hand-held-style camera movements designed to elicit a visceral viewing experience. We put the camera everywhere, from the front seat to the side of the road. Editing played a huge role in amplifying the emotion and speed as well, through fast pacing and heavy-handed sound design. These two shooting styles work together to amp up the viewer while also giving them time to catch their breath.
